Well Dweller is a dark fairy-tale Metroidvania set to launch on 22 September 2026. It’s one of those indie games that really grabs your attention, not only because of its unique tone, artistic style, and quirky main character, but also due to the way it blends charm with dark fairy‑tale melancholy. Moreover, the game is developed by Kyle Thompson, an indie creator known for making small, heartfelt, hand‑crafted Metroidvanias with a very distinct tone. Previously, he created Islets and Crypt Custodian, both of which showcase his signature storytelling and painterly art style. Both games have the coveted Overwhelmingly Positive reviews on Steam.
Gameplay
A shadowy fairy-tale Metroidvania unfolds at the depths of a forest well. The bravest soul? A small bird called Glimmer, ready to take on the queen. The game immerses players in a blend of storybook charm and decaying realms: quirky characters, haunting remnants, and a universe that’s both snug and disquieting.
Take on the role of Glimmer, a small bird wielding a matchstick. You are tasked with setting the evil queen ablaze to rescue your family. Journey through a shadowy fairy-tale world, meeting delightful characters living in the kingdom’s depths. Fight fearsome creatures and unlock new skills to widen your adventure. Crack puzzles, uncover hidden truths, and reveal the enigmas lurking in this decayed kingdom.
Among the rotting ruins are a charming cast of characters just trying to get by. Go camping with Ilda, a tiny mouse on the run from the queen’s grasp. Explore an abandoned castle with Looter, a mysterious scavenger who searches the kingdom for the best wares to steal. And find and reunite with all of your sheltered siblings who were snatched up one night by a crazed hunter.
